A small wildfire near West Kelowna, British Columbia, was brought under control after a rapid response from the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS). The fire, located in the Jack Creek area, was first discovered on Sunday afternoon and initially classified as out of control before firefighters successfully contained its spread.
According to BCWS, the wildfire measured approximately 0.1 hectares and exhibited Rank 1 fire behaviour, meaning it was primarily a slow-moving, smouldering ground fire with minimal open flames. Two ground crews, a response officer, and two helicopters were immediately deployed to the scene to suppress the blaze.
By Sunday evening, officials upgraded the fire’s status from out of control to held, indicating that crews expected it to remain within established control lines. Later that night, BCWS announced the wildfire was officially under control, meaning it was no longer expected to spread beyond its current perimeter. Around 10 firefighters remained assigned to the incident to complete suppression efforts and monitor for any remaining hotspots.
Preliminary information from the BC Wildfire Service suggests the fire was likely caused by lightning, though the exact cause remains under investigation. There have been no reports of injuries, damaged homes, or evacuation orders related to the Jack Creek wildfire.
The incident comes just days after another wildfire in the Upper Fintry area prompted evacuation alerts for more than 500 properties in the La Casa community. That evacuation alert has since been lifted as firefighters gained control of the blaze.
West Kelowna has also experienced a series of suspicious fires in recent days, with the RCMP investigating multiple blazes that occurred within a short period in residential areas. Authorities have appealed to the public for surveillance footage and any information that could assist the investigation. Officials have not indicated that those incidents are connected to the Jack Creek wildfire.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant as wildfire conditions continue across the Okanagan region. Emergency officials remind the public to report smoke or fire immediately, follow local fire restrictions, and monitor updates from the BC Wildfire Service and local authorities as the wildfire season continues.
